The New Generic
2019
This study reframes the notion of the "generic" in architecture by redefining the functional circulation core as a field of spatial cores encompassing programmatic, infrastructural, organizational, and structural elements. The proposed live/work building illustrates this through a grid of cores organized on a 30’ x 20’ plan. Central circulation nodes function as primary circulation and fire stairs, while additional cores provide flexible programmatic and structural support.

Each core aligns with a shear wall grid, maintaining a minimum of two shear walls in either orientation based on its programmatic function. The precast concrete structure fosters a non-hierarchical interior, where partition walls create various spatial divisions. With designated work floors and live/work configurations, the building emphasizes longevity and adaptability, allowing for multiple self-sufficient systems to change over time according to core placement and future uses.
