Drosmes Māja
2020
During the Nazi occupation of Latvia, fisherman Zanis Lipke hid Jewish families in an underground shelter beneath his shed. The existing, small and dark museum pavilion documents his heroic but covert work; this competition called for a new education center to bring light to the cultural pluralism that has sprouted from the ashes of this historical horror. Crucially, the proposal was to fit within a diminutive neighborhood vernacular, with UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Our proposal thus elevates educational spaces in a bright metal volume, cantilevering it from a darker, massive concrete spine. Daylight filters unobtrusively from above, conceptually lifting the continuous ground plane towards the sky.
